With every grooming product we buy, new ingredients creep into our lives. Not all of them helpful, though. So, might as well learn to identify which ones could potentially be health villains.
On top of the list of ingredients I avoid are Parabens.
So, what are these parabens? Why do products have them? Why do I avoid them? And do you need to be concerned? Read on.
Parabens Are Omnipresent
Parabens are nothing but artificial preservatives: they increase the shelf-life of products (basically making them long-expiry-types).
But some research papers have pointed out that they may be linked to skin irritation, and more serious health risks like – cancer, lower sperm counts, and endocrinal disruptions (simply put, they may make hormones go haywire).
What I found particularly scary was this study, where they found parabens in people’s blood ssamples – a good couple of hours after they had used paraben-containing products. Eeks!
Once I started looking for parabens, I found they are everywhere – shampoos, body wash, moisturizers, shaving gels, deos. It’s really hard to avoid them.
What Can We Do
Since these products – shampoos, body wash, moisturisers etc come in such close contact with the skin on a daily basis, they obviously pose a higher risk to our health.
So, I’ve now made it a habit to read the ingredient list. And, if I find any parabens – methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben – I just look at alternative brands.
Or, sometimes I take the short-cut and simply look for packaging that comes with the paraben-free reassurance. I have learnt that it is important to look specifically for the paraben-free label, because in a lot of cases even the so-called all-natural and organic brands have parabens lurking in their ingredient list.
Luckily for us, lots of responsible brands are becoming conscious of this. The Man Company has a great range of products that are paraben-free, and use gentler ingredients. (If you would like some options, have a look here).
Going paraben-free may help you rest easy – you know, knowing that what you are using on your skin and hair are all health-friendly products.
